EURASIA HIGHER EDUCATION SUMMIT – EURIE 2016 HELD IN ISTANBUL ON FEBRUARY 17-19, 2016
EURIE, supported by EURAS- Eurasian Universities Union, one of the higher education network with 85 members from Europe, Asia and the Middle East and DEIK- Foreign Economic Relations Board, taken place by the participation of over 1,000 academics in Istanbul.
Foreign student recruitment, academic collaborations, new education models, issues and suggestions about higher education were discussed during the Summit taken place with the leadership of Turkey.
Participated by the chairperson of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) of Philippines Dr. Patricia B. Licuanan, DEIK President Omer Cihad Vardan, YOK Deputy President Safa Kapicioglu, Deputy Minister of National Education Orhan Erdem, NAFSA (National Association for Foreign Student Affairs), EAIE (European Association for International Education) Board Members, officials of European Commission, Yunus Emre Institute, TUBITAK, and Turkish National Agency were among the participants.
Delivering the opening speech, the Minister of Higher Education of Philippines Dr. Patricia B. Licuanan talked about gender inequality in education. Adding that marriage of young girls at early age is an obstacle for their career, Minister Dr. Licuanan said, “ We still have an issue of having more women outside of school compared to men.”
Speaking at the Summit Deputy Minister of National Education Orhan Erdem said that the number of universities increased from 76 in 2002 to 193 today and the number of academics increased from 76,000 to 150,000 and the number of students is now 6,062,886.
EURAS- Eurasian Universities Union President Dr. Mustafa Aydin said, “ With the Summit, we aim to introduce our country’s higher education worldwide, and make Turkey an attraction hub in this regard.” Mentioning that there are currently 120,000 international students in Turkey, Dr. Mustafa Aydin said, “ the most students we sent abroad go to the United States. Turkey is among the top 5 countries to send students to the abroad.”
The exhibition taken place as part of the Summit held exhibitors of over 200 prestigious universities from Italy, Philippines, Jordan, Lebanon, Austria, Holland, Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhistan, Kyrgyzystan, USA, Europe and Far East.
Over 50 state and foundation universities were represented under ‘Study in Turkey’ pavilion.
