Guest Speaker Bio
Dr. Emmanuel has served as the Director of the Berkeley International Office since 2003. In this capacity, he provides leadership and management oversight for about 14,000 inbound international students, scholars, faculty and employees. Prior to that, he held a similar position at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign where he also obtained his doctorate in Higher Education. Dr Emmanuel has held leadership roles with NAFSA: Association of International Educators including serving as Vice President for Professional Development and member at large of the Board of Directors.s.

International Student Retention Strategies During COVID-19 – A data driven approach.
We are living in a world profoundly different than the one just a few months ago. For international education professionals, it entails different strategies to support and retain international students. But we need information. With the sudden onset of local and national shelter in place requirements many students scrambled to return to their home countries. But exactly how many did so, and of those who remained, how were they coping and what were they planning about their future? This brief presentation will cover a snapshot survey of international students at the University of California, Berkeley and what measures are being put in place to support that community.
